Owned and operated by Keiko Kawaharada, Mr. Oji-san is a friendly, warm restaurant where guests can feel like their eating in a Japanese home. Five years have elapsed since the passing of Keiko-san’s husband and former Executive Chef, Nobu Kawaharada. It was his final wish for her to perpetuate the excellent service and food at the restaurant and while she has lived up to the promise, Keiko-san has decided to add a new twist to Mr. Oji-san’s menu.
Mr. Oji-san is pleased to welcome its new Executive Chef, Matthew Naula. Keiko-san, in true Oji-san fashion, kept the business in the family as Chef Naula is also her son-in-law. Keiko-san added, “I am extremely excited about having Chef Matthew at Mr. Oji-san and can’t wait to see what kind of new flavors and ideas he can bring to us. I am so proud of him.”
Chef Naula has many goals for the restaurant in mind, but he will try his best to carry on the legacy of the original “Mr. Oji-san,” the late Nobu Kawaharada. Chef Naula’s style is traditional Japanese with a Pacific Rim flair. “I will always have Chef Nobu’s basic principles in my heart. I will try to incorporate the different techniques of preparation and style that I have learned over the years, as well as utilizing all of the wonderful flavors on Hawaii in my cooking. I plan to utilize locally grown produce and fresh seafood from our islands.” Chef Naula promises to bring new flavors to Mr. Oji-san’s menu while keeping the original items to please the loyal customers of this family-friendly restaurant.
While old favorites remain, Chef Naula promises to add something new. He has created a “monthly special” with favorites like rib-eye steaks, ahi and Japanese style braised ribs. With Keiko-san’s help they have created special wine dinners that have become an instant favorite with customers new and old. What other exciting plans are in store for the future?
