New evidence in investigation of toddler’s death on H1
Police arrested Matthew M. Higa, the 23-year-old man who allegedly threw a 1-year-old boy from an H1 overpass into the path of speeding cars.
The toddler was identified as Cyrus Belt, by his mother, Nancy Asiata Chanco, who was later interviewed by the police as part of their investigation.
It appears that Ms. Chanco was sharing an apartment with her boyfriend and father on Iolani Avenue in the same building that Mr. Higa lived. At 11:40am, when Cyrus was thrown into the freeway, Ms. Chanco had gone out and left her son at home with her 62-year-old father and 29-year-old boyfriend.
Ms. Chanco identified her neighbor, Mathew Higa in a police photo lineup and also stated that she would never leave her son with Mr. Higa due to his strange demeanor.
It remains unclear how Mr. Higa got a hold of Cyrus, who would have turned 2 on February 7. Ms. Chanco’s boyfriend left to pick her up shortly before the time of the incident while her father claims he was asleep at the time. It is possible that Cyrus opened the door himself for Mr. Higa, who then took him away. The investigation in this matter is ongoing.
