Smoking Ban:
The Hawaii County Council is considering legislation that would ban smoking in public beaches, parks and recreation areas throughout the Big Island. The Council has decided to expand a ban that was put in place for Kahalu'u Beach Park. The County Council voted to ban last year after students collected thousands of cigarette butts during a beach clean up. Parking areas at the public beaches would also be included in the measure, forcing smokers to light up on the nearby roadways.
If passed, the ban would be punishable with a $100 fine.
