Navy Sonar
February 13, 2008
A federal court judge heard arguments by environmental groups seeking a ban in the Navy's use of low frequency sonar during upcoming anti-submarine exercises near Hawaii. The judge plans to review the claims made by the Ocean Mammal Institute, Animal Welfare Institute, KAHEA, Center for Biological Diversity and Surfrider Foundation and look at classified material provided by the Navy. While allotting only 45 minutes for the hearing, the judge said that it will take much longer to come to decision. Two recent rulings have halted the use of the sonar off the coast of California.
