The US Navy will be responsible for shooting down an unresponsive spy satellite. The attempt will be made to the northwest of Hawaii by the Aegis missile cruiser USS Lake Erie. The satellite, launched in 2006 by the National Reconnaissance Office, started to malfunction soon after reaching orbit. It was only in January, however, that military officials realized the satellite would crash back to earth.
