In an effort to go "green," the Big Island has plans to install its own garbage-to-power incinerator like the one that operates at Campbell Industrial park on Oahu. While much smaller than the H-power plant on Oahu, the Big Island facility could help ease some of the strain on the Hilo landfill which is nearing capacity. At current projections, the landfill will have to close within the next four years.
