Volcano Area Residents Warned

Volcano residents were warned to evacuate late last night after elevated levels of sulfur dioxide were reported from Kilauea. Civil Defense officials announced voluntary evacuations at about 9 p.m. last night for five communities northeast of Halema'uma'u crater. The advisory covered the Mauna Loa Estates, Ohia Estates and Volcano Golf Course subdivisions as well as the Volcano Village and Keauhou Ranch areas. There were no reports of residents showing up at any of the emergency shelters.
