Court Rules For Detainees
June 12, 2008
The US Supreme Court passed a ruling yesterday that detainees in Guantanamo Bay may appeal their prolonged detentions in US Federal courts. There are about 270 prisoners at the detention camp in Cuba and are classified as "enemy combatants" by the government and as such are not under the usual protections of the US constitution. The 5-4 decision was voted on along ideological lines with Justice Kennedy, Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg and Breyer voting in favor of striking down the laws.
