Exxon Valdez Damages Overturned
June 25, 2008
The US Supreme Court has ruled that Exxon Mobil will only have to pay $507.5 million in damages for the Exxon Valdez oil spill that devastated more than 1,200 miles of Alaska coastline in 1989. The accident was the worst oil spill in US history. Thousands of birds and marine wildlife was destroyed and local fisheries were devastated. The decision yesterday overruled an appeals court judgment that awarded the $2.5 billion to about 32,000 commercial fishermen, Alaska natives and property owners.
