Group Occupied Iolani Palace
August 18, 2008
Iolani Palace grounds were reopened today, just two days after a pro-sovereignty group occupied the palace and grounds on Friday. The group, calling itself the Hawaiian Kingdom, broke into the palace on Friday afternoon and raised a flag bearing the Akahi Nui family crest on the barracks flagpole. Members of the group also locked the gates, but were later arrested by state sheriff's and enforcement officers from the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
