Fugitive Freed, Then Recaptured
A fugitive who was captured on Oahu was accidentally released before being picked up by the authorities once again. Jones was wanted in connection with the burning of his 1-year-old son in Utah in which Jones allegedly put his son in scalding water in November 2006. The child was rushed to a hospital with third-degree burns covering 50 percent of his body. The baby was hospitalized for several months.
Jone was initially arrested Wednesday night at the Pacific Marina Inn off of lagoon drive near the airport by the Hawaii Fugitive Task Force and two deputies from the Marshals Service in Utah. Before he could be taken back to Utah, Jones had to face a liquor violation here in the Islands. After appearing in court yesterday, the judge set a court appearance for the local violation on September 18th. Sheriffs at the county jail inadvertently released him, not realizing that he had charges pending in Utah.
After the mix-up, US Marshals tracked him down once again and apprehended him at about 5:30 pm. He was caught getting into a vehicle driven by another person on Judd Street. Officials took him to the Honolulu police cell block where he is now being held on an extradition warrant.
