Aloha Stops Cargo Service
Aloha Airlines shut down its cargo operations on Monday. The move cuts off nearly 85 percent of air shipments between Oahu and the neighbor islands. Most of the shipments were perishable or time critical items such as mail, newspapers, food, pharmaceuticals and perishable farm products. The airline also carried packages for FedEx, UPS and DHL shipping services.
The airline said in a statement that the primary lender would not continue to fund the airline and that a purchase agreement with another buyer had not been completed. Nearly 400 workers are affected by the shutdown and will be out of work.
Businesses that relied on Aloha to deliver goods to the outer Islands complained that they were given no notification about the closure. Some plan to begin slower barge shipments while other plan to use the Superferry to deliver goods in a timely manner. Aloha had contracts to deliver the majority of US mail to Maui and the Big Island, but the US Postal Service said that it has alrady made alternative plans with another company Corporate Air.
