Farrington High TB Outbreak
About 100 students and five staff members at Farrington High School will be tested for tuberculosis next week after being exposed to a student with an active strain of the disease. The student had tested positive for inactive TB last year, but the disease became active some time later.
This is the third time this school year that students have been exposed to TB in Hawaii schools. The first case occurred back in December at Roosevelt High School. The second was in February, a teacher at Kahuku High & Intermediate School tested positive for the disease, prompting screening of more than 100 students and staff. Tests of the Farrington High students are set to begin
next week.
If left untreated, tuberculosis can cause prolonged coughing, weight loss, fever, weakness, fatigue and eventual death. While TB is spread through the air and affects the lungs, it also may affect other parts of the body. Hawaii has the highest rate in the nation, due to the relatively high percentage of foreign-born residents.
Health officials have said, however, that the Farrington High School testing is precautionary and that there is currently no risk to the community.
