Facebook Agrees To Safeguards
Facebook, the second largest social networking site, has announced that it will implement more stringent safeguards to protect younger users. Attorneys generals from several states have been negotiating for months with Facebook and MySpace, for tighter privacy controls. All states, except for Texas which wants quicker age verification policies, are expected to sign the agreement.
The changes to Facebook include banning convicted sex offenders from the site, limiting older users' ability to search online for subscribers under 18 and building a task force seeking ways to better verify users' ages and identities. Safeguards will also be put in place to limit 'cyberbullying' where users send threatening and anonymous messages to other users and sometimes classmates.
Some of the other changes will involve privacy compliance of companies advertising on the site, the removal of alcohol and tobacco ads to minors and sending warnings to minors when they send private information over the network. The protections included in the MySpace and Facebook pacts could be expanded to smaller services such as Friendster and Bebo in the near future.
