Monk Seal Births Up
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, has reported that two Hawaiian monk seals have been born in recent weeks on Oahu. That brings the total to three the number of births for the endangered animal and is a new record for the island. The total number of pups born in the main Hawaiian Islands since the beginning of the year now stands at ten, compared to seven at this time last year.
There are only an estimated 1,200 seals in Hawaiian waters. On Wednesday, a seal gave birth to a pup at a North Shore beach which follows another birth in the same area on Monday. Scientists are monitoring both parents and pups for any signs of problems. A monk seal was born on May 2nd, but was abandoned by its mother a few days later. The pup was promptly rescued is doing well in captivity.
Monk seals usually give birth between February and July, with a peak between April and June. Scientists for NOAA have reported that several females around the main Hawaiian Islands are pregnant and that they expect more pups in the coming weeks.
