Sovereignty Group Returns To Iolani
The sovereignty group called Hawaiian Kingdom Government has returned again to Iolani palace to call for the reinstatement of the Hawaiian monarchy and a return to self determination. Thirty-three members met at the grounds this morning, joining hands, saying prayers and singing. The Hawaiian Kingdom Government has staged protests on the grounds since April 30 when they initially laid claim to the palace and denied public access for nearly eight hours.
On Friday, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources rejected a permit to allow the group to meet on the palace grounds. City permits are required for groups of twenty five people or more. Members of the group have applied for and received permits to assemble on the premise on a weekly basis. The DNLR refused the permit last week after the agency said that representatives for the group entered buildings that are off considered off limits to the group.
In order to get a new permit, the DLNR has said that leaders of the group must give their names and sign assurances that they will abide by city rules. While it is unclear whether or not the group applied and received permits for this week, leaders say that they plan to occupy the grounds indefinitely.
