Fugitive Hedge Fund Manager Found
Sam Israel III, a fugitive wanted for more than a month, turned himself into local authorities in Southwick, Massachusetts on Wednesday. Israel was declared a fugitive when he failed to show up on June 9th at a Massachusetts prison after he was found guilty of defrauding investors out of $450 million while he was the manager of the hedge fund Bayou Management.
Police were immediately suspicious on the day of his arraignment when they found his SUV parked on New York bridge with the words "suicide is painless" written on the hood. No body was found and the US Marshall's office immediately opened an investigation. Last week, federal marshals arrested Israel's girlfriend, for helping him to escape. Debra Ryan, 45, admitted to police that she helped Israel pack an RV with his belongings and a motor scooter before he disappeared. She faces up to 10 years in prison.
Israel faces 20 years in prison on his conviction, but may face further charges. Any other charges to be brought against Israel will be decided by the US Attorney's Office in New York.
