Waikiki High Rise Blaze
Firefighters battled a potentially deadly blaze in Waikiki yesterday. A fire broke around noon on the top floor floor of Kaimana Villa, 2550 Kuhio Ave at the corner of Kuhio and Paoakalani Avenue. Over 40 firefighters were called to the scene to battle the blaze.
Investigators say that the fire started when the man living on the top floor apartment discarded a partially lit cigarette into a plastic bottle. The cigarette then smoldered in the container before igniting furniture on the patio.
Damage to the building was estimated to be around $30,000.
Residents in the building were slow to evacuate while others declined to leave the building. Some of the residents say the fire caught them off guard because they heard the sirens from the fire trucks before the fire alarms in their building ever went off.
Investigators think that the fire alarms in the buildings didn't go off because most the smoke was concentrated outside on the balcony.
There were no reports of injuries.
