Maui Woman Gets Probation In Drug Case
Ohia Aniban pleaded no contest to charges of criminal conspiracy and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug in the biggest drug case in Maui history. Aniban was arrested in January of 2007 when police raided her home in Kahului and found nearly 18 pounds of cocaine and more than 6 pounds of crystal methamphetamine.
The street value of the drugs was estimated to be roughly $1.5 million.
Aniban and her husband, Patrick Aniban, were arrested and charged with first degree felonies and that carried jail terms of up to 20 years for each count.
At the time of the arrest, Ohia Aniban worked as an elementary school teacher.
After her husband was sentenced to a 20-year prison term yesterday, Aniban decided to plea no contest on reduced drug charges. Her lawyer asked the court for leniency, claiming that Aniban was influenced negatively by her husband. The prosecution and the defense have recommended to the judge that she be placed on five years probation.
