Steve Fossett's ID Found
Hikers say that they have found items belonging to adventurer and millionaire Steve Fossett. Fossett disappeared while flying his small plane over the Nevada desert a year ago. Despite weeks of extensive land and air searches, no wreckage was found and he was declared legally dead in February 2008 after investigators concluded that his airplane was destroyed in a fatal accident.
Fossett made his money in the financial services industry, but is renowned for his daredevil exploits, which include nonstop, round-the-world trips aboard a balloon, a fixed-wing plane and a boat. He was the first person to circle the globe solo in a balloon in 2002, and the first to fly a plane around the world solo without refueling in 2005.
A spokeswoman for the Mono County Sheriff's Department said that the hikers found three sets of identification, some papers and a sweater. Investigators say that wreckage from the small airplane Fossett was piloting when he disappeared was not located.
A team will be sent in to search the area later this week.
