WTC Building Delays
Builders at the World Trade Center site say that the Freedom Tower will not be completed in 2009 as planned. The tower, which is meant to represent the city's revival after the attacks on September 11th 2001, will instead more likely be finished in 2013. When completed, the tower will will stand 1,776 feet tall and cost an estimated $3 billion.
Delays at the site have centered around insurance claims and the recent building downturn in New York. There have also been squabble between city and state agencies and the owner of the site, Larry Silverstein.
Along with the delays of the Freedom Tower, other features will also be effected, including the underground part of the memorial museum, the mass transit hub and part of the subway. The subway costs have skyrocketed, partly due its complexity. In order to help speed construction, designers say the space will be simplified by adding columns to the soaring open mezzanine envisioned by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
Even so, the subway and surrounding areas won't be finished before 2012.
