California Wildfires Still Burn
Wildfires continued to rage through southern California today, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes and destroying hundreds of homes. The fires have raged out of control due to low humidity and to the swift blowing Santa Ana winds, blowing in from the northwest. Gusts from the winds have been reported as high as 70 miles per hour.
Fires have popped up in several locations. To the north of Los Angeles, the Marek and Sesnon blazes have burned more than 15,000 acres. Near Oceanside, a fire has burned more than 3,000 acres and forced the evacuation of Marines from Camp Pendleton. Another fire near San Diego threatened 300 homes in the Campo area, near the Mexican border.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Statewide, Schwarzenegger said, the fires have burned 26,800 acres and destroyed 64 structures. About 3,100 personnel, including National Guard members, are using 321 fire engines and 22 helicopters to fight the blazes.
Forecasters say that the Santa Ana winds will continue until Wednesday.
