Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick announced that he will resign his post after pleading guilty to perjury in a civil case. City prosecutors say that he lied under oath during a lawsuit in order to conceal an affair with his former chief of staff. Kilpatrick's resignation will make Detroit City Council president Kenneth Cockrel, a former journalist and community activist, acting mayor.
