A large brush fire on Lanai yesterday burned nearly 1,000 acres on the island and forced hundreds to evacuate from nearby hotels. County officials say the fire, which started just before 12:15pm, erupted near the Palawai Basin, approximately four miles from Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay. The blaze spread quickly to surrounding areas, fueled by dry brush and fanned by strong, gusty winds.
