El Nino and Monk Seals
These days the world has been swallowed up by natural phenomena such as El Nino. This phenomenon, which originates in South America’s seas, invites rising seawater temperatures. Particularly, it causes the Pacific region’s seawater, encompassing Japan and Asia, to also rise in temperature. This year also it is currently being reported that the El Nino phenomenon is occurring, and the regions concerned are pushing for countermeasures.
We have the impression that Hawaiian Monk Seals are not affected by El Nino, but due to this phenomenon, they are being driven to a situation where their population is decreasing. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is one native characteristic of the Hawaii that Hawaiimode™ often walks along, and is now a very precious creature on the verge of an extinction crisis. How has the Monk Seal been influenced by El Nino? What kind of relationship does it have?
On average, 11 Hawaiian Monk Seals die for some reason or other every year. Most of the deaths are by artificial means such as being caught up in fishing nets or eating plastic garbage, however, El Nino also influences their population.
By the occurrence of El Nino, the sea’s surface temperature rises above normal, and perhaps being influenced by global warming too, plankton become diseased, and many Monk Seals that are blocked by the sea’s surface die by suffocation. According to a research team at the University of Hawaii’s Marine Biology department, El Nino’s influence on Hawaiian Monk Seals is clear. Comparing the years when there is an occurrence of El Nino and when there is not, there is a small but seemingly broad decrease in population.
From this fact, the relatedness of Hawaiian Monk Seals to El Nino is being investigated, and new plans that point to preventative actions are being drawn up and applied.
I think the first requirement to preventing El Nino is to defend against global warming as well. For the conservation of our oceans, we need to prevent ocean pollution and create an ocean environment that the Monk Seals can live in more easily. However, as much as El Nino and Monk Seals are related, I’m beginning to that think there is not one human being among us who will put a stop to this trend.
