Michigan Primary
Senator Hillary Clinton and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the Michigan primaries for their respective parties on Tuesday.
It was a political horserace for the Republicans. Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain were in a dead heat in the polls and at the final tally Romney had 39% of the vote and McCain 30%. Romney was under intense pressure to win the primary. He had finished second in Iowa and New Hampshire, and many felt that his campaign was at an end. His victory in Michigan means that a different candidate has won in three different states, leaving no clear candidate for the Republicans nomination.
Since Michigan moved up the date for its vote, the Democratic party will not recognize the votes in the primary. For that reason, most candidates did not put their names on the ballot, leaving Senator Clinton the only candidate. She won, of course, but support from African-American voters was low, suggesting that in a general election, most would vote for Senator Barack Obama. This could cause problems for her as she makes the swing through southern states.
The next big test for both candidates will come in South Carolina on January 19th.
