Trash Plan
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman, in addressing the Oahu trash problem, announced plans to ship Oahu trash to the mainland and expand the HPOWER plant to burn more trash. The city will begin shipping trash to the mainland starting next year and will build a third HPOWER boiler by the year 2011. Some have objected to expanding HPOWER because the plant will produce more ash, which will eventually have to be placed in a landfill. The Mayor noted these objections, but still favors the ability to generate more electricity for city use.
Companies have already started to bid on the trash shipments, which are expected to be around 100,000 tons a year. The HPOWER plant boiler will be completed in 2011.
Waimanalo gulch landfill, the main dumping ground for Honolulu waste, is scheduled to close in May of this year.
