No Drug Tests For Teachers
In a vote last night the State Board of Education voted 7-0 against a provision that would fund the random drug testing of state teachers. The board members rejected the testing because they say it would take money away from other educational programs and some felt that random tests were an infringement on employee rights.
The random tests would have cost the board $400,000 a year and would check roughly 3,000 teachers. Financing was supposed to come from the state, but Governor Lingle refused to fund the measure, stating that the money should come from the $2 billion educational budget.
The drug testing program stems from several embarrassing cases involving Educational Department employees either abusing or selling drugs on school campuses across the island. The convictions are what prompted the new legislation. While Education Board members remained unconvinced about the need for the program, many parents are angered by the decision not to test.
