Students To Be Tested For TB
Students who attended Kahuku High School and Kahuku Intermediate School will be tested for tuberculosis after a teacher tested positive for the disease last month. Department of Health officials stated that over 100 students and staff were in contact with the teacher and will have to be tested for the disease in the coming days.
While teachers are required to have tests before the school year, a person can carry TB and still test negative. TB is spread through the air, usually by coughing or sneezing and can remain dormant in the body without any ill effects. It is only when the disease becomes active that it causes symptoms like weight loss, fever, coughing and chest pains. While there is no immediate danger for the students, the disease can be deadly if left untreated.
Kahuku High School plans to hold a meeting for parents and to answer questions tomorrow at 7:00pm.
