Mayor Discusses Mass Transit
Mayor Mufi Hanneman held a meeting last night to discuss mass transit on Oahu. At a meeting in Kapolei Middle School, the mayor and engineers met to answer questions about the proposed project from the community. The city has estimated the cost of the project at $3 billion to $5 billion dollars and completion of the line in 2017.
The city council recently picked a steel wheel technology for the 20 mile route from Kapolei to Ala Moana. The steel wheel system has come under fire because of the excessive noise levels associated with the technology. A panel of experts has evaluated the system and found that while it is cheap, the noise levels will be high. The rail is scheduled to run up to 400 times a day from 4am to midnight on elevated tracks.
People living along the line will be subjected to 75 decibels of noise, roughly equivalent to a vacuum cleaner running 5 feet away. The largest impact in terms of noise would be to people living along Salt Lake Boulevard. The city points out that many of the areas where the train will run are already noisy, but because of the buildings in the area the route through Salt Lake will make it by far the noisiest.
The next public hearing on the mass transit system will be held at the city council and is scheduled for March 19th.
