Officials Remove Homeless
State officials and local sheriffs removed the last remaining homeless people living alongside Nimitz Highway in Iwilei yesterday. Nearly 30 people had lived in tents at the location behind the cement barrier near the K-Mart store and Salvation Army since last year. The Sheriff's Department has been monitoring the area the past month following several complaints of safety and health problems.
Numerous complaints have surfaced about increased criminal activity in the area. Police arrested four individuals on Thursday in connection with criminal offences. Officials with the Department of Health were also concerned that with no toilets, there were growing sanitation issues.
Social-service agencies were contacted to help those who were evicted, but many chose to simply pack up their belongings in shopping carts and walk away. One urban homeless campsite remains along the Ala Moana Beach Park wall that runs next to Ala Moana. Over the past few weeks, some 30 people have slept on or near the wall, some setting up tents or sleeping bags. It is uncertain whether or not State officials will target that area next.
