Superferry Is Back
The Hawaii Superferry will resume inter-island service, three weeks ahead of schedule. The Alakai has been in dry dock for the last six weeks, undergoing repairs to its rudder after it was damaged back in February. Over 300 employees with the company have been furloughed for the last few weeks as repairs were finished.
The company will resume its schedule wit one daily trip between Oahu and Maui. The ferry will leave Honolulu at 6:30am and arrive in Kahului around 10:15am. The return trip will leave Maui at 11:15 and return to Oahu at 2:15pm. The cost for a one-way trip will be $39 per passenger and $59 for vehicles. The special fare will last until June 5th. Reservations can be made online or by calling (877) 443-3779 from 6 am to 7 pm.
With the closure of Aloha and ATA airlines, the Superferry is predicting that passenger numbers will increase. Since low cost go! Airlines entered the market, a price war started between the airlines has driven down inter-island ticket prices. Many saw the Superferry as too expensive. Now, with the closure of Aloha Airlines, the company is expecting airline ticket prices to rise, bringing fares more into line with the Superferry. If all goes well, the Superferry hopes to start a second trip to Maui later this spring and eventually add a trip to Kauai. Big Island service is slated to start in 2009.
