Wal-mart Expands Low Cost Drugs
Wal-Mart has announced plans to expand its low-priced drug program. The program, started in Florida in 2006 and later at all Wal-Mart stores, offers discount prices for commonly used generic drugs. Pharmacies at the other US stores owned by Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Markets and Sam's Club, will also follow the new pricing policy.
Under the new pricing plan, Wal-Mart will offer more than 1,000 over-the-counter items for $4 or less and sell some 90-day generic prescriptions for around $10. It will also increase the number of women's medications as well, including drugs that help treat osteoporosis, breast cancer and hormone deficiency. Other drugs that will be reduced include the diabetes drug metformin and the asthma drug albuterol.
The current drug price reduction comes as the company tries to expand its health and wellness services, which are seen as a way to bring shoppers into its stores and to boost sales. Along with the drug program, Wal-Mart is opening in-store health clinics that offer basic preventive and health services, such as blood pressure and cholesterol screening.
