UH Football TV Deal
The University of Hawaii athletic program will see a boost in revenue if a new TV deal with Oceanic Time Warner Cable goes through as expected. The new deal, coming on the heels of the successful 12-1 Warrior Football season, would see an increase of around 30 percent for the schools athletic department. In addition to the increase in fees UH said it will receive more than $350,000 annually in production and advertising time on KFVE, KHNL and Oceanic Time Warner Cable.
The athletic department will receive at least $2.3 million per year for a minimum of three years and a provision for up to six years under the terms of an agreement. The previous contract was for $1.75 million and year and $500,000 in advertising. KFVE/KHNL, the 25-year rights-holder for UH sports, remains as the primary broadcaster with about 100 televised events scheduled in the next academic year, but Oceanic Time Warner will be the majority partner by paying more in fees. The cable company has hinted at broadcasting some of the games in hi-def or offering other broadcasting services.
Pay-per-view rates for the 2008-09 school years have yet to be announced but people familiar with the deal expect them to be similar to last year's rates. Season packages on Oahu were $330 for renewals and $385 for new customers. A new feature of the PPV plan, however, is a discount for football season-ticket holders. If ticket holders apply for the PPV service before the middle of July, they can receive up to 50 percent off of some of the televised games.
