Kunia Homes Deal
Mayor Mufi Hannemann has announced that an agreement with the James Campbell Co. that will allow most of the residents at Kunia Plantation village to remain in their homes. The company, which owns the 119-acre property in Kunia, agreed to transfer ownership to the nonprofit Hawaii Agriculture Research Center for just $1.
Many of the people who live in the Kunia Plantation Village lost their jobs when Del Monte closed in 2006. Under the new agreement, the research center and nonprofit organization, will keep the housing affordable and will continue to rent the units to agriculture workers and retired Del Monte workers. Locals living on the plantation have had to pay huge increases in rent since the company closed.
Campbell Estates is also planning two more affordable housing projects including more than 1,200 new homes in a development called Makaiwa Hills, and 720 more in Kapolei West. Roads will also be improved and a fire station and day care will be added.
