Wildfires Rage In California
Wildfires raged throughout parts of northern California this past weekend. Firefighters tracked more than 700 fires on Sunday. Many were small, however, and posed no risk to people or property. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has reported that more than 2,600 firefighters were fighting the fires.
State officials had expected a large number of wildfires this season due to below average rainfall for the past two years. Lack of any significant rain this past year prompted the governor to declare the state under drought conditions. Fire officials note that dry underbrush can fuel larger fires. In anticipation of the fires this week, the State Forestry Department mobilized inmate work crews, 328 fire engines, 13 air tankers and 16 helicopters.
Firefighters in Napa County faced a strong blaze that has already devastated nearly 4,000 acres and still threatens a 250 home subdivision. While firefighters work diligently in the north, officials are preparing for the possibility of another round of lightning across the southern part of the state later this week.
