Permits Needed For Beach Weddings
The Department of Land and Natural Resources has announced that it will be enforcing permits for beach weddings and other commercial activities on beaches around the state. The decision went into effect on June 16th. DLNR officials say there have been requirements for permits but the problem has always been enforcement.
Aside from beach weddings, the new regulations also call for permits for all commercial activities on the beach. Groups filming or taking photographs on state beaches are required to have a State film permit to legally film any beach activity. The agency stated that they had suspended the permit programs but an increase in beach activities has led to a step-up in enforcement.
Some officials on Maui are not happy with the decision. Famous as an international wedding destination, many fear that the new regulations will adversely affect the local wedding industry. Meetings with hotel and wedding planner industries are being coordinated by the Office of Tourism Liaison and are scheduled for June 26 on Kauai, July 1 in Kona on the Big Island, and July 2 on Oahu, to look at the issue.
For those looking to have a beach wedding, a Right of Entry permit application can be picked up either at the DLNR office or the City & County of Honolulu.
