BODIES The Exhibition
For an out-of-body experience, may I recommend “BODIES The Exhibition”. Actually, this exhibition featuring real human bodies preserved using polymer may be categorized more as an inside-body experience! Due its great success and popularity, the exhibit first presented in Japan has now traveled the world, and finally made it to the shores of Hawaii where it may be viewed at the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
This unusual exhibit uses real human specimen preserved using standard mortuary practices, which are then dissected to show specific parts or features. Following dissection, the specimen is immersed in acetone to eliminate the body’s water and then placed in a bath of silicone or polymer, before being sealed in a vacuum chamber. Finally the body is hardened using a catalyst, leaving it in the ideal condition for a subject of study and observation.
This somewhat somber exhibition may be your only chance to get an “inside” view of the human body and its functions. Every part of the body is featured, from hands, les, and feet, to skin, bones, stomach, heart, lungs, liver, blood vessels, brain, etc. On an even more somber note, not only “healthy bodies” but also bodies ravaged by disease, such as cancer, as well as a fetus, are on display.
Admission is $26 for adults and $18 for children under 12. The exhibit is being held until October 31.
