Honolulu Marathon Winner Disqualified
The winner of the 2007 Honolulu Marathon was disqualified yesterday. The two time winner, Ambesse Tolossa from Ethiopia, failed a drug test from the US Anti-Doping Agency. The Agency found high levels of morphine, a banned substance, from samples taken at the time of the race. Kenya's Jimmy Muindi, the runner-up in the race, will now be declared the winner.
This is the first time that a Honolulu Marathon winner was disqualified in the 35-year history of the race. The drug disqualification ruling means that Ambesse Tolossa will be banned from all international competition until April 4, 2010.
Muindi of Kenya, the second place finisher, will receive the $40,000 first place prize.
Honolulu Marathon officials became aware of a first positive test just earlier this year, but a second positive test was required before the results could be made official. The race hasn't tested the top finishers in the last seven races, but reinstated the testing rule in 2007 after a female winner tested positive a year earlier. Many in the racing community were surprised by the morphine use from Tolossa because the drug in no way enhances performance during the race.
