Extensions Given For Homeless Shelters
Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle signed an emergency proclamation yesterday to complete the building of three shelters for the homeless on the Leeward Coast. The Governor's office stated that the proclamation was needed in order to complete construction. The funding was set to expire today. This was the fourth extension that Governor Lingle has signed to build shelters since the initial emergency proclamation in back in July 2006.
The issue came up when the city started closing down beach parks at night, forcing many of the homeless to sleep in the city parks. The number of homeless on the Leeward Coast getting state aid in February was around 3,900. About 36 percent of those were children. The number of homeless on Oahu, however, is estimated to be much higher due to a lack of concrete documentation.
Since Lingle's 2006 proclamation, the state has built two Leeward Coast shelters that have helped about 1,500 people. The three shelters to be completed include, Villages of Maili, Building 36 in Kalaeloa and Kahikolu Ohana Hale O Waianae. The new units would proved space for 650 people and help with foster care and job training. The latest proclamation will be funded until December 31st.
