Nimitz Highway Homeless Evicted
The State Department of Transportation cleaned out around 90 homeless people living under the Nimitz Highway viaduct yesterday, in an effort to curb increasing criminal activity in the area. Police officials had cited the area as a haven for crime and drugs. Eviction notices were passed out on Friday and the clean-up started promptly at 7am yesterday.
State officials have raised concerns about the homeless camp. Over the last four months, sheriffs have arrested about 40 people in the area, primarily on offenses relating to crystal methamphetamine use. Other arrests include copper thefts and outstanding warrants. Prostitution and gambling are also a problem. Police have stated that around 40 people a day visit the area for gambling, prostitution or drugs.
The clean-up covered over 14 acres of land under the highway. Officials hauled away 13 truckloads of trash, scores of tires and loads of scrap metal. There was so much debris, in fact, that officials are estimating they will be finished sometime next week. Many of the homeless have lived under the highway for years and have no other place to go. In an effort to assists the homeless, the Living the Word Ministries opened its parking lot as a temporary shelter. The city is also making an effort to find shelters for those in need.
