California Firefighters Die In Crash
One firefighter has died and eight other are presumed dead after a tragic helicopter crash in California. The firefighters were hurt when their Sikorsky S-61 helicopter crashed near the north end of the so-called Buckhorn Wildfire near Junction City, California. The men were preparing to come off the mountain at around 7:30pm when the accident occurred.
The helicopter was carrying thirteen people, including ten firefighters, when it crashed. Four badly burned men were recovered and hospitalized. Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration are looking into the cause of the accident.
The owner of the aircraft, Carson Helicopters, reported that it has never lost a service helicopter. The Sikorsky S-61 can transport up to 18 firefighters and drop 1,000 gallons of water via a bucket suspended from the bottom. It is a mainstay of many forest firefighting efforts.
Despite the fatal crash, fire officials said they would continue their efforts on the Buckhorn Fire while the FAA continues its investigation.
