Big Traffic Problems As School Starts
State officials are predicting big traffic delays as school starts for Island schools next week. During a press conference, city and state officials kicked off their "Beat the School Jam" campaign. Over 55,000 college and private school will be starting up next Monday and the Department of Transportation plans to suspend roadwork on Oahu to allow time for drivers to get used to the new commute times.
Officials with the deparment are also encouraging people to use the TheBus, TheBoat and Vanpool during morning peak hour traffic. The city is also pushed its revamped "zipper" lane. Since the state changed the ZipperLane's minimum occupancy on July 8th, the lane has been handling about 1,700 vehicles daily, compared with 3,400 before the change. The DOT is hopeful that it will help relieve some of the congestion next week.
Additionally, officials are also urging people to drive with care and keep an eye out for more keiki on the roadways.
