LA Train Killer Sentenced
Juan Manuel Alvarez, 29, was sentenced to 11 life terms today for his involvement in a Los Angeles commuter train crash in January 2005 which killed 11 people and injured more than 180 others.
During the trial, Alvarez testified that he had parked his Jeep Cherokee on the commuter tracks in order to commit suicide, but changed his mind at the last minute. He said that he then tried to start the car to get the vehicle off the tracks, but the car had stalled. In a panic, Alvarez jumped out in time to watch as the train slammed into the stranded vehicle, jump the tracks and hit another train traveling in the opposite direction. Police later found Alvarez wandering aimlessly around the accident.
Prosecutors in the case said the he concocted the plan to get the attention of his estranged wife, while Alvarez maintained all along that it was a suicide attempt. Prosecutors had asked for the death penalty, but a jurors opted for life in prison without the possibility of parole.
