Honolulu Zoo Tiger Has Cubs
Chrissie, the Sumatran Tiger at the Honolulu Zoo, gave birth to three cubs late Monday night, according to keepers at the zoo. Chrissie and the father of the cubs, Berani, arrived at the Honolulu Zoo in November 2005 from Fort Wayne Children's Zoo in Indiana. The pair is part of a breeding program designed to increase genetic variability in the captive population.
There was some excitement at the zoo back in February when Berani escaped from his enclosure. The tiger was loose for about five minutes after zoo staff inadvertently left a gate open. No one was injured in the incident and he was lured safely back to his cage, but the mistake led to a redesign of the enclosure to increase safety.
The last time tigers were born at the Honolulu Zoo was on April 27, 1981 to Tex and Marybell. The tigers produced five cubs. Two survived and were eventually sent to other zoos.
Reports are that the three new cubs are doing well, but zoo officials say that will wait before revealing them to the public.
