Maui Automates Trash Collection
The county of Maui has announced that it will "automate" some if its trash collecting services in Upcountry and West Maui. As part of the new "1 Can Plan" project, 7,000 customers will be given 95-gallon wheeled cart that can be collected by a one-man garbage truck. Delivery of the new carts has started in some areas and service should start by the end of November.
Traditional trash pick-up involves three men, one driver and two others to pick up and load the refuse. The new cans are designed to be used with a one-man truck. While the system has been used for some time on the mainland, the project is a first for Maui. Department of Environmental Management Director Cheryl Okuma said the new service was made possible as the result of negotiations with United Public Workers union. Workers who work on the traditional trucks have agreed to be reassigned to other duties.
The new system should improve effeciency. Over 1,000 homes a day can be serviced by the automated trucks, compared with the present 350-home maximum with manual collection.
