Woman Who Lost Arm Defends Husband
Lise Solomua-Alatini, involved in a crash in which she lost her arm, testified today that her husband was not responsible for the accident. Solomua-Alatini was driving the car at the time of the accident when the SUV slammed into the median on the H-1 Freeway airport viaduct and flipped several times. After the accident, her husband, Iovani Alatini, was charged with assault.
After the crash, prosecutors say witnesses heard Iovani yelling at his wife to shut up as she moaned in pain. The defense disputes that allegation. A paramedic who treated Lise testified that she told him that her husband had kicked at the steering wheel, which led to the accident. Lise's uncle, who talked to her in the emergency room, also testified her husband has caused the accident.
But Lise changed her story on the stand today. She claimed that she was was driving under the influence at the time, arguing and punching at her husband when she lost control. Prosecutors dispute that claim, saying that Lise is trying to shield the couple's three children and protect her husband from punishment.
If convicted, Alatini faces a maximum of five years in prison.
