Makapuu Trail Opens For Pets
The Makapuu Trail is open once again for people and their pets. Earlier this year, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources banned pets on the trail due to concerns about irresponsible owners. Officials with DLNR said that they received complaints before the ban about excessive pet waste and bags that were left along the trail or flung over the side of the cliff.
Residents in the area, however, wanted to reopen the trail and brought the issue before the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board. The ban was soon lifted. In order to appease those that complained, the Hawaiian Humane Society donated a doggie pot-pet waste station, which dispenses biodegradable bags for use to pick up after pets.
Pets are allowed in all Hawaii state parks unless there is a sign notification and must be on a leash.
