PETA Asks Victorino To Give Up Spam
The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are urging Hawaii born baseball star Shane Victorino to give up eating Spam. Victorino, a center fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies' baseball team, has come under pressure from the group for statements he made saying that he enjoyed eating Spam Musubi, a local favorite.
PETA sent a letter to Victurino yesterday, describing an undercover video showing workers apparently mistreating pigs at an Iowa farm owned by MowMar LLP, a supplier to Hormel Foods, the makers of Spam. He was urged to "abandon the Spam" and PETA Assistant Director Dan Shannon hoped that the "cruelty in every can of Spam will infuriate Shane more than a high Hiroki Kuroda fastball."
A graduate of St. Anthony High School, Victorino, 27, has been instrumental in the Phillies' run in the National League championship series. On Monday, he hit a home run that gave his team a come-from-behind win against the Los Angeles Dodgers to take a 3-1 lead in the series, just one game shy from the World Series.
Victorino and Philadelphia Phillies' officials could not be reached for comment.
