Decadent Shangri-la Tour
There is a mansion called “Shangri-la” located near Diamond Head, which houses an impressive collection of Islamic art.
“Shangri-la” refers to a utopia. This mansion certainly does appear to have once served as one woman’s Shangri-la. This woman’s name was Doris Duke. Doris’ father, James Buchanan Duke, was a successful businessman who made an enormous fortune in his lifetime in the tobacco and electrics business.
Doris’ father unfortunately passed away when she was just 12 years old and she inherited 1 million dollars (equivalent to about 10 million dollars today). During a visit to Islam, she got her hands on various Islamic art, then spent ten months on an extravagant honeymoon that ended in Hawaii. Doris became completely enthralled with Hawaii. She decided to build her very own “Shangri-la” here in Hawaii, where she displayed all her favorite pieces, including sculptures, paintings, and antiques, from the Middle East.
The Doris Duke Foundation continues to preserve her “Shangri-la”, with guided tours being offered by the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
